Why Choose to have a New KHSD Catamaran
or Trimaran Design.

Why a New Custom Design is Best
Quality:
Vessel strength and longevity are the result when
the designer is involved in the construction materials;
what materials are used and how they are used.
In most production cats you have little choice nor
information on the quality of the basic structure.
It might have a snappy big screen TV, but woven
roving and polyester resin in the hulls. I
can make sure that the proper core and knitted fabrics
are used on your boat.
Newer Work:
The leading edge of multihull design is changing
all the time. As your designer, I can help
you take advantage of the latest design advances.
In contrast, a production boat will take years from
the design being drawn to hull number one going
for its first sail.
By then it is not a recent work.
The accountants will then insist that as
many units as possible be taken off of the molds,
even if the design is well passed its time
Individuality:
This way you can get the exact vessel to fit your
needs. I can create a design fits your lifestyle. My
customers can escape the formulaic sameness of so
may of the production cats out there now.
There are hundreds of great multihull designs,
but only a handful of designs are available as production
boats. The
chance of finding a vessel that fits your needs
is much greater if you have it designed. A
design that meets the needs of an owner quite well
can be further modified to better meet his particular
requirements.
An owner may want a revision to have 6'-9"
headroom.
With a production boat that is impossible
if it was not so intended to start with.
A custom boat can make it right from the
beginning so easily. It will have a style
that is your own, instead of the tract-housing of
so many production offerings.
Integrity:
Having a professional stand behind you throughout
the process is important. A cranky designer
is of much more use to you than a smooth salesman.
If the builder wants to substitute lower quality
materials or equipment, it's my job to protect you.
On a production boat, its too late.
Design
Fees: Typical naval architecture design
fees for a complete scope of work are typically
5% to 6% of the price of the vessel. Conventional
wisdom is that catamaran designers should not expect
to be paid, but don't forget that a complete design
fee, designing and looking out for your boat, is
about half what a sales commission would be for
the same vessel sold from a production line.
I've saved you thousands of dollars right here.
